HIV/ART Nurse Specialist (H/ANS) Training Program

Description

The aim of this comprehensive training course is to provide advanced training on HIV, AIDS and antiretroviral therapy (ART) to nurses in Ethiopia so that they may serve as HIV/ART Nurse Specialists (H/ANS) throughout the country. The course is designed to take 4 weeks, comprising 8 days of classroom learning, 6 days of clinical mentoring, and 5 days of on-site training.

This training program and the role of the HIV/ART Nurse Specialist were created in order to increase nursing capacity for effective AIDS care and treatment in Ethiopia. The goal of the program is to train 200 nurses from 50 ART clinical sites and affiliated health centres to serve as HIV/ART Nurse Specialists (H/ANS).

The reality of HIV care requires that nurses take on a more active and central role in the treatment of individuals living with the disease. Their participation in multi-disciplinary treatment teams is crucial to ensuring that Ethiopia provides anti-retroviral therapy (ART) to the thousands of Ethiopians living with HIV. Such participation in these new healthcare teams requires that nurses acquire greater knowledge of and skill in treating and managing HIV patients.

The HIV/ART Nurse Specialist will be a nurse who is prepared to take a central role in the ART multidisciplinary team. This role includes triaging HIV patients, treating and assessing patients in need of palliative or symptomatic care, supervising ART ancillary staff, refilling ARV medications for stable and adherent patients, providing ongoing adherence assessment counselling and serving as an HIV/ART point person for hospital staff. Each unit of the H/ANS training will emphasise the unique role of the HIV/ART Nurse Specialist and illustrate the specific responsibilities of this role on the ART multi-disciplinary team. A nurse who has 1) completed the 4-week HIV/ART course, 2) demonstrated clinical competency and proficiency (tested by using observational checklists), and, 3) successfully passed a post-course examination with a score of at least 80% will earn the "Certificate in HIV/ART Nursing."
